DURAPLUS® & DURACHIMNEY® MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Are Dura-Plus and DuraChimney the same thing?
Dura-Plus and DuraChimney are both 3-Wall Class "A", however DuraChimney is 1700° and Dura-Plus is 2100° (HT).

2. Are starter sections still required?
Yes; however the the starter section is built into the support box.

3. What connectors are used for adapting to triple wall?
A Slip connector is used for single wall DuraBlack; A Close Clearance Connector is used for DVL.

4. Does Simpson Dura-Vent have 9" chimney pipe?
9" diameter chimney is obsolete and is no longer offered.

5. Can I use two elbows together?
No. You cannot use a 15° and 30° to make a 45°.

6. What is the outside diameter?
For 6 - 8" add 4" to the inside diameter. For 10 -16" add 5" to the inside diameter.

7. How do I extend Dura-Plus thimble sleeves?
Make an extension sleeve with similar material which must have a 1" overlap minimum.

8. Can Dura-Plus be installed down to the wood stove without an enclosure?
No. Dura-Plus should end at the ceiling. Use stovepipe down to the wood stove.

9. Is a Simpson Dura-Vent manufactured cap mandatory?
Yes. It is required to have a UL approved system.

10. What is the maximum offset?
Two 2' lengths between the elbows.

11. Is there asbestos in the pipe?
No. A Ceramic Refractory Blanket is used.

12. General transition kit installation questions?
Read the installation instructions.

13. Is there a high wind cap available?
Yes. A turbo cap is available (Stock #'s 5076, 5176, or 5276).

14. When do I need to use a ventilated flashing?
Always, unless it is in an attic with ventilation, or louvers, or the pipe is not enclosed.

15. How do I size a masonry fireplace?
Measure the height and width of the fireplace opening in inches. Find the total height of the chimney in feet. Use the Chimney Sizing Chart (page 21 of the DuraPlus Chimney Catalog) to find the size of the pipe.

16. Where do I get non-hardening high-temperature sealant for anchor plates?
At your local hardware store. Use a minimum 1,000° sealant.

17. How is the firestop radiation shield and the attic insulation shield installed?
Install the radiation shield at the ceiling level, then install the insulation shield in the attic.

18. Is this DuraPlus double wall pipe? Solid pack?
No. DuraPlus is class A triple wall 2100° chimney pipe.

19. Do I have to install a tee support bracket if it is below grade?
Yes. A tee support bracket is required if below grade; start digging until you have access. We recommend enclosure.

20. What adapter should I use for Zero Clearance Stoves?
A Base plate.

21. How do I seal flashing and what do I use?
With non-hardening sealant, seal uphill part of flashing and right and left sides, leaving the bottom open (do not seal).
